Moving Roof

The Perth Arena is the newest state of the art sporting and entertainment complex for Perth, Western Australia. Vector Lifting has been involved in both the steel fabrication as well as the design, manufacture and installation of the mechanical drive units for the opening roof, which is the centre peice to the Arena. The roof mechanism is driven via 4 bogies used to open the 800t roof to a span of 64m in just 8 minutes.


The Margaret Court Arena (MCA) at Melbourne Park recently underwent major upgrades including a retractable roof to fully enclose the stadium to allow events to be held in any weather conditions.  Working with NH Architecture, the arena Architects, Vector Lifting were engaged to completely design, manufacture and install the moving roof drive and control system.


The retractable roof comprises of two independent panels, each supported on a series of drive and idler bogies designed by Vector Lifting.  Each panel is approximately 60m x 40m in area and can travel simultaneously or individually as required by the arena operators.  When designing the roof consideration was given to opening speeds and roof performance including a series of roof skew controls to ensure the roof operated within the design load allowances of the stadium structure.  It is believed that at the MCA retractable roof was the fastest in the world, opening or closing in under 5 minutes.


As well as the mechanical design of the roof, Vector Lifting designed and manufactured the control system.  Primary control of the roof is focused in the Event Control Room where roof operators overlook the stadium court and the roof above.  To move the roof, operators use the Touch screen display to input a desired open position.  Once input the roof operates automatically driving and stopping at the required location.

Vector Lifting has recently completed the design, fabrication, installation and commissioning of the retractable roof for the Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne Victoria. The retractable roof is part of a large upgraded for the state of the art tennis centre. Vector Lifting has worked together with Lend Lease and the architects to provide a sophisicated yet compact drive and support system to comply with the clients requirments. The complete control system that monitors the roof opening and closing and skew at any given time is design and installed in house via Vector Liftings electrical design team.

Retractable Roof


Vector Lifting has developed a trolley system to assist in the maintenance of crushers. The Hydroset Removal Trolley is designed to suspend of rails and drive into the crushing vault where it is able to engage with the Hydroset and Eccentric of the crusher to assist in the removal from the crusher for periodic maintenance. The HRT has been design and fabricated by Vector Lifting to comply with all the relevant Australia Standards. Vector Lifting is aware that each crushing plant and crusher is different and will work with the client to ensure the suitability of each system.
